My main goal in science is to better understand how holobiont plants and fungi interact with the surrounding soil, with particular interest in:

  • belowground crop adaptation to drought
  • crop landraces to uncover potential traits in the root and rhizosphere
  • soil resource acquisition strategies in the context of plant economics, e.g. with carbon as the currency
  • Iplant-fungus-soil interactions and interactions between the plant-soil system and soil animals (e.g. earthworms) in agricultural and natural environments
  • the functional role of mycorrhizal and saprotrophic fungi in soil, particularly on carbon, nutrient and water dynamics
  • land use systems with high inter- and intraspecific variation, like in monocultures using multiple varieties or in agroforestry
